Natural Remedies for Knee Pain

Knees, we bend them, kneel on them, run and jump on them daily. Knees are the highest load bearing joints in our body and it usually comes as no surprise when they begin to ache after a hard and long day of work. Since this is a load bearing joint, it also begins to degenerate as we grow older. The bones begin to demineralize whereas the cartilage begins to slowly become stiff. The vision of this article is to provide you with some home remedies for knee pain that may help relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Bishop’s Weed: Powder a spoonful of bishop’s weed or Omum and consume this with a glass of lukewarm water twice a day.

Making Paste: You can also make a warm paste by using wheat flour, castor oil and turmeric powder mixed in goat’s milk or ghee or some type of clarified butter, and apply this therapeutic mixture on the painful area to cure the pain effectively at home. Alternatively, you can also make hot paste from seeds of Black phaseolus, leaves of Rasna, Sandal, Castor and Country mallow to be applied on the affected joint.

Fenugreek seeds: Soaked fenugreek seeds in mustard seed oil are a great remedy for knee pain. Smear these seeds on the knees and allow them to dry for some time. This remedy warms up the knees and increases the blood flow to them, improving lubrication and the health of cartilages.

Herbs: Dried ginger, Wintergreen, Boswellia, Devil’s claw, Cat’s claw and similar other herbs are good for swelling and the pain associated with inflammation. An equal proportion of dried Ginger and stem of Heart leaved moonseed should be taken with Chebulic myrobalan twice a day.

Ice Pack: Application of ice and cold compresses to alleviate pain and swelling in most instances. Ice can be very effective in relieving the pain, soothing the inflammation and bringing down the swelling in the knee. Apply ice or cold packs immediately to prevent or minimize swelling. Apply the ice or cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 or more times a day. Also this pack should be placed in such a way that the entire knee is covered.

Steam Bath: Taking steam baths helps to reduce Knee Pains caused by Arthritis. You could sit in a steamy bathtub so that your knee soaks up the warmth from the water, which is excellent for alleviating the pain. Alternately, you could apply a hot water bag on your knee too. Follow this remedy on a regular basis to ease the pain.

Massage Therapy: This technique is very effective in soothing aches and pains all over the body. Gently massage your knee area with some warm olive oil, , mustard oil or coconut oil around two or three times a day to relieve pain and inflammation and encourage blood flow. Make sure that the massage lasts for at least 5 to 10 minutes at each time. Do not massage if it cause any uneasiness with pain.

Avoid high-impact exercise, such as running, skiing, snowboarding, or playing tennis, until your knee is no longer painful or swollen.

Resting is absolutely essential that you refrain from putting too much pressure on your knees at all times. Giving your knee to heal from an injury or an inflammation will prevent a relapse. Rest and protect an injured or sore area. Stop, change, or take a break from any activity that may be causing your pain or soreness. When resting, prop your affected leg on a couple of pillows, or sit on a recliner chair, which allows you to keep your legs elevated.
