Home Remedies for Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is unusual inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are situated at the back of your throat lying one on each side of the throat. These are an important part of the immune system that provides defense against infections.
- Milk is one of the most effective remedies in the treatment of tonsillitis. If a glass of pure boiled milk, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder and pepper powder is taken twice a day can help a great deal.
- Juices of carrot, beet, and cucumber, taken individually or in combination, are beneficial.
- Banafsha flowers (Viola odorata) are beneficial in the treatment of tonsillitis. About 20 gm of these flowers should be boiled in 100 ml of milk.
- A gargle made from fenugreek (methi) seeds is very effective for tonsillitis.
- The best way to prevent tonsil stones is to gargle with salt water. This simple home remedy not only helps in removing the tonsil stones but it also prevents the growth of additional stones.
- A paste can be prepared from water and boiled figs (anjeer) and this paste can be applied externally on the throat area to provide a cooling and soothing effect. Dried figs are also supposed to have healing properties that would help cure tonsillitis. Mash some figs and mix with honey before eating. This remedy will reduce the pain in your throat.
- One teaspoon each of honey and lemon in warm water can make up for a warm liquid which would be very useful to provide some relief to your throat.
- Gargling two teaspoons of onion juice mixed with lukewarm is used to gargle which helps in curing the tonsillitis problem.
- The dried leaves of Mint leaves (Mentha Arvensis) can be used in the same manner like the Onion Juice.
- Drink enough water through the day to flush out the toxins from your body. Try drinking warm chicken and vegetable soups and fresh vegetable juices so that your body has a supply of fluids going in.
- Mix mustard powered and hot water. Gargle using this solution so that the germs can get flushed out.
- Cut a medium sized lemon into two halves and on one half apply some salt and pepper, make sure that it penetrates into the other half. Warm the lemon over some source of heat. Lick the juice slowly and do this at least two to three times a day.
- Make a paste of equal amounts of horseradish seeds, barley seeds, mustard, jute, flaxseeds and radish seeds. Apply this paste over your affected tonsils.
- Take a bitter Tumbi and scoop out the pulp. Fill the emptied kernel with water and leave it aside overnight. Keep drinking this water in small quantities daily for at least a week. This will help in curing tonsillitis.
- Soak the roots of white pea in water overnight, grind them and drink with water twice a day.
It is also advisable to avoid sour, sweet, chilli and salty dishes as these may just irritate your throat or aggravate the problem. You should also avoid coffee and soda.
