Fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV attacks humans with weak immune systems. Actually, this virus lives in the body in an inactive form and fever blisters are the reactivation of this virus. Fever blisters are also known as cold sores because they appear usually after the attack of cold or flu. Fever blisters are tiny red blisters and their attack areas are lips and outer edge of the mouth.
These cold sores are highly communicable. Fever, exposure to sun for a long time, stress, menstruation, fatigue, injury to lips or deficiency of calcium are some of the causes of fiver blisters. They cause tingling, depression, itching, inflammation and enlargement of lymph nodes near the sores.
Some home remedies for fever blisters on lips are very effective. If you are the victim, avoid eating chocolates, peanuts, oat meal and whole wheat products. By adopting precautionary measures, you can prevent this disease. A cold sore is a contagious disease. So, avoid sharing of utensils and towels with others.
Do not kiss your loved ones as you can communicate the HSV virus to them. Change your tooth brush immediately after the attack. Keep your hands clean. You should use sunscreen lotion of 15 SPF around your lips for relief. As cold sores are a result of weak immunity, consume tincture of Calendula, Echinacea, Burdock and Lomatium to enhance your immunity.
As natural cures for fever blisters, Aloe Vera is a very useful herb in treating cold sores. Due to its anti-septic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, it helps in lessening inflammation and also halts the progress of cold sores. You can use Aloe Vera externally as well as internally. For external use, apply its gel on the sores directly. You can also drink aloe Vera juice for quick healing.
Grapefruit is also good in curing cold sores. Make a paste of grapefruit seeds by adding aloe oil or olive oil. Apply this paste directly on the sores. It will give you a cooling effect. Lemon balm is also very useful in this regard.
Sage tea is also helpful in healing cold sores. Herbal sage has sedative properties and helps in relaxing muscles. You can also add ginger root in sage tea for better relief. 4-5 cups of sage tea are suggested by herbalists for some days to get rid of cold sores completely.
Paste of 100 ml coconut oil, 2 ml medicated liquid soap and 3 ml carbolic acid helps in curing cold sores effectively. This paste is also effective in treating minor itching on armpits and between the thighs. You can keep this paste for several days in an air tight container.
Apply ice cubes on the cold sores for treating inflammation. Massage of ice cubes for 10 minutes at an interval of every 2 hours will help in getting rid of them. Ice helps in preventing the movement of virus to skin.
Apply medicated skin cream on your lips to keep them moist. It will help in softening sores and in reducing burning sensation. It also prevents cracks and bleeding from the lips.
