Paroxysmal retrenchment of the diaphragm, the large circular muscle of the body that separates torso from the stomach, can cause hiccups. Hiccups occur more recurrently after eating spicy food, alcohol consumption or the intake of certain drugs that irritate nerves of the digestive system. Few hiccups can be a matter of fun but constant hiccups are a serious matter because hiccups are the result of poor supply of blood to the diaphragm. Hiccups are involuntary as we have no control over them. But you can stop hiccups by applying certain home remedies.
It is a belief that hiccups are good for infants and they help in increasing height and body weight. But if hiccups become irritating for the children of 7-15 year age group, a very interesting remedy is advised to be used. Tell your child to hiccup when you say go and for each hiccup promise him an incentive (money etc.). This will in most of the cases stop hiccups. It is not scientific but is a workable method because with this method you occupy his mind for something important and this gives time for reduction of irritation of stomach muscles.
People apply many funny methods for stopping hiccups. They put finger under the nose for a minute, press the area around navel 2-3 times or rub the back of the person whom hiccups are already irritating a lot. Some people try to end hiccups of their dear ones by shocking moves. The success ratio of this method is 50:50. Others drink water for stopping hiccups.
Some natural home remedies are effective to stop hiccups. Drinking water is the simplest method of getting rid of this condition. Gargles with salty water are also useful. Some people believe that by doing breathing exercises they can control hiccups. Eating sugar or ice cubes is also helpful in reducing them. Intake of one spoon of honey is also very much relaxing.
Ginger is a very useful kitchen ingredient in this case. Juice of fresh ginger with honey is effective in treating hiccups. You can also put a piece of ginger in mouth for relief. Ginger tea is also effective. You can also make ginger soup by adding cumin and cinnamon. Add 1 pinch of salt in half glass of soup.
Cardamom is a very aromatic and attractive herb. Powder of cardamom is useful in treating hiccups. Boil ½ tea spoon of cardamom powder in 100ml glass of water. Boil till half of the water remains in the pan. You can add honey or sugar in this water for increased taste. By drinking this water you can get sure relief. This water is also helpful in improving digestion.
Mint juice is also fruitful in this regard. You can make mint beverage by adding lemon juice of two lemons, salt and pepper in one glass of mint juice. Mustard seeds are also effective in this regard. Fry mustard seeds in pure ghee and swallow fried mustard seeds to halt irritating hiccups.
